Well, well, well the NFL draft is upon us. I'm a bit confused as to what I am most pleased about though, the end of the Mocking season, or the arrival of the actual draft. It can get a little puzzling day to day with the far fetched proclamations of player movement up and down the draft board. We know GMs are trying to hold their cards close to the vest, so where are these daily movements coming from?
I suspect from thin air. These are 'mockerations' afterall. In fact, they've well served their purpose: They kept us talking NFL football.
Never has so few piled so much so high and so deep on so many. Well done sirs.
On to the draft!!
The spectacle that is the draft is less than 10 hours away and the fur is already flying. Stories of Josh Allen's High School texting, Baker Mayfield has grown to 6'1", nasty meanspirited comments about Darnold, and Rosen is an invalid he's gonna need a wheelchair to operate in the pocket.
As a Jets supporter, understanding their history one can't help but feel a good bit of angst and trepidation about the Jets managements' decision making. Is Mike Mac going to fall for the banana in the tailpipe and let a lot of nonsense lead him astray? Paranoid you say? Maybe, but just because a person is paranoid doesn't mean someone isn't following them. Long suffering jetaholics see minefields around every corner. Only natural to wonder if there will be more of the same.
One example of the propaganda is the claim by one reporter that Rosen should not be drafted in any of the first 6 spots in the draft. THEORETICALLY ALL SIX TEAMS IN THE FIRST SIX, INCLUDING CLE TWICE, HAS A QB 'SITIATION'. How can anyone with a straight face say the best pure thrower in the draft doesn't warrant a call from one of the six teams? Most of the best running QBs in the NFL last year got blown up. Speed burners like Brady, Ryan, Brees, and E. Manning have ridiculously long careers. I want my QB operating in the pocket. By the way, Nicky Montana did just fine in the SB without the theatrics Wentz normally supplies. He probably runs the 40 in 5.0.
Mel Kiper argues that the Jets gave up a king's ransom for what is likely to be the third best QB. Since it is unlikely the Giants will draft one, they have in essence moved up one more spot. Big Blue will be out of their minds not to take Saquon Barkley. Stop the nonsense about who you take where. He can go the distance as a runner or receiver. AND HE FILLS A GLARING NEED. Stop trying to engineer the RB position out of the game. He's a QB's best friend. Next to OL.
Couple more points on the Giants; NFL teams don't throw seasons away. Not one year. Two or three years is an eternity away. You got some dam good players on that team. They made it into tourney 2 years ago and with a chance to bring in reinforcements, the GM drafts players for the future? NO. You have a roster full of players giving blood and sweat now. That has to be served.
Main Characters:
Baker Mayfield; last couple weeks whispers said the one to go first overall was Josh Allen. This week it's Baker. I don't doubt the kid is smart. Staying home to watch the show with the people that brung him. My personal view is that his place has been inflated to get the Jets off their actual quarry. Still I am a Baker fan.
Sam Darnold: The chosen one. The experts decided after his one year burst onto the scene to anoint him. I wanted to see how he'd do as a known entity. He did not do as well. He did improve through the season. It is still left to be seen whether he's year one Sam or year two Sam. Jets shouldn't have to make a decision on him since he should go first overall.
Saquon Barkley: Kid does everything really really well. Home run hitting runner and receiver. More in the line of 18-20 carries/7-10 catches a game.
Chubb: Highly skilled dude. Highly professional. QB needs have to be served.
Josh Rosen: It is amazing the attempts to diminish this kids tools. Throwing is till the quickest means to move the ball. Running around is mostly compensation for some deficiency. My choice. Of course, get him blockers....But I've been saying that for years about the Jets.
Nelson: More mumbo jumbo about where players can and can't be drafted. This guy should not go past 6 unless the Colts can move down and still get him. Adding a great OLineman always has a positive trickledown affect on the other guys on the line.
Josh Allen: Heard the bad news about his texts. Good sign that he addressed the situation head on. All's fair in love and business. It ain't person. Just bitniz. Good luck young fella.
LET THE SHOW BEGIN!
